Tom Briggs reflects on Kate

Created by Mike 16 years ago
My memories of Kate are of her visits to McKeesport with Aunt Mary. I can remember my dad and my little sister driving to the Greyhound bus station in Pittsburgh to pick them  up and bring them to our home for a visit with Grandma. The thing you do remember about Katie, back then, was her smile. She did seem to genuinely enjoy being with Aunt Mary (as Aunt Mary enjoyed having her) and visiting the Briggs family in McKeesport.  It was a pleasure having them visit. You can almost hear Aunt Mary and Katie playing the piano at our house and you can definitely hear Grandma’s rocking chair creaking and the lot of them talking and laughing upstairs. As time went on and we all seemed to go our separate ways, we lost contact with Katie. Our, or my, only contact with Katie was through the Christmas letters from Joanne and Bob. And here again, was something I came to look forward to receiving every year. Through these letters I’ve come to know Mike, Alison and Andrew.I was able to read the obituary for Katie and read some of the comments written by her friends, colleagues and students in the guest book of the funeral home. I was amazed by Katie’s accomplishments, things I didn’t know about her, and how much she was regarded by the people in her life. You don’t truly know what someone has accomplished in life, until they are gone. Then you see what they have accomplished, by how much they are missed. Katie will surely be missed by her family, friends, and her colleagues. The road has risen to meet her, the sun is shining warm upon her face and God is holding her in the palm of His hand.Katie- rest in peace.
